Her awards and honors include an NEA Distinguished Artists Fellowship for Lifetime Achievement in American Theater, a MacArthur Fellowship, the Skowhegan Medal for Performance, the Chevalier des Artes et Lettres from the French Cultural Ministry, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a USA Fellowship, an Anonymous Was A Woman Award, and honorary doctorates from the New School and California Institute for the Arts.
