Dance

New York, NY

By weaving together movement, song, and text, Miguel Gutierrez creates process-focused dance performances where experimentation and emotionally driven action lie at the center of the work. His trilogy, Age & Beauty, is a meditation on queerness, artmaking, and middle age. The third installment, DANCER, premiered in 2015 at Live Arts Bard at the Fisher Center. He received three BESSIE Awards: two for his choreography and one as a dancer in the John Jasperse Company. He received the Guggenheim and Foundation for Contemporary Art Fellowships and support from MAP Fund, National Dance Project, National Performance Network, and Creative Capital, among others. He invented DEEP AEROBICS, which he describes as an “absurdist workout for the radical in us.” He is a Feldenkrais Method practitioner and has authored a book called WHEN YOU RISE UP (53rd State Press, 2013). He is currently creating music for Antonio Ramos’ new piece, touring Age & Beauty Part 1, and making a new album of songs.

Artistically, what do you do and why do you do it?

I make work that is philosophical inquiry disguised as performance. I poke at ambitious questions about the nature of existence. I am fascinated by how a body, over the course of a performance, offers multiple representations of itself: a vernacular everyday body becomes hyper-emotional, eroticized, aged, heroic, frail. I work with dance, action, text, voice, sound, and light. I am interested in how the interaction between the elements of performance create a modality of comprehension that is choreographic, spatial, and intuitive by nature, not necessarily detached from language, but detached from the rational supremacy that language imposes. I want to hypnotize the audience into a temporary autonomous zone where the practice of paying attention is itself the payoff, and where this attention leads us to commiseration, to understanding that these big questions about life, death, love, banality, and the desire for wonder are shared. I do it because I have to.
